1. Step Up

Dancers face UP, sticks held at side.

On the call “STICKS”, the sticks are brought up to the vertical, shoulder width apart, with hands close to shoulder level (“Sticks Level”). Unless specified, this is the normal position of the sticks throughout the dance.


 

Steps 1 to 4:

Three steps forward, starting on the INSIDE foot, followed by a scissors kick.

Sticks are swung across the body, then out, then up in front of the body and finally back to rest on the shoulders.

Steps 5 to 8:

Four steps backward, turning to face IN on the last.

Sticks remain on shoulders throughout.

Steps 9 to 16:

Three steps INWARD to form a single line down the centre of the set, meeting partner by the RIGHT shoulder, then a hop on the spot

Three steps on (to the opposite file). Turn to face UP and tap the free foot as the fourth step.

Sticks remain on shoulders throughout.

Steps 17 to 32:

Repeat steps 1 to 16, but turn right to face IN and bring sticks LEVEL on the final step.


 

2. Turns and Stars

Rants 1 to 8:

Couple 1: Four rants Right-hand Half Star (one turn) with arms extended and sticks vertical, then two rants sideways DOWN the set with sticks resting on partner’s shoulders and two backwards to the files in Couple 2’s positions.

Couple 2: Four rants on the spot, then two rants sideways UP the file to Couple 1’s positions, then two rants on the spot.

Couple 3: As Couple 2, but move DOWN the file to Couple 4’s positions.

Couple 4: As Couple 1, but move UP the centre and out to Couple 3’s positions.


 

Rants 9 to 16:

Repeat the above movements in your new positions to return to starting positions.


 

Turn to face UP on the final rant.


 

3. “Ones and Fours” Cast

Rants 1 to 8:

Couple 1 dance DOWN the outside of the set to finish in Couple 4’s positions, facing IN.

Couple 4 dance UP the centre of the set to finish in Couple 1’s positions, facing DOWN.

Couples 2 and 3 dance on the spot, facing UP.


 

Rants 9 to 16:

Couple 2 dance UP the centre of the set to the top, then down the outside to finish in Couple 3’s positions, facing DOWN.

Couple 3 dance DOWN the outside of the set to the bottom, then up the centre to finish in Couple 2’s position, facing DOWN.


 

4. Half Weave

Couple 1 (now at the bottom of the set) dance:

2 rants forward to meet by RIGHT shoulder, dropping their RIGHT stick as they meet

2 rants UP the set to meet Couple 2 by LEFT shoulder, dropping their LEFT stick as they meet

2 rants UP the set to meet Couple 3 by RIGHT shoulder, dropping their RIGHT stick as they meet

2 rants UP the set to meet Couple 4 by LEFT shoulder, dropping their LEFT stick as they meet

8 rants on the spot, facing UP.


 

Other Couples dance on the spot until Couple 1 reaches them, join in the weave for 8 rants, then dance on the spot until the end of the figure.

(At the end of the figure, each dancer should be in their starting position, but in the opposite file.)


 

5. Couples Cross

Each couple in turn does the following:

2 rants sideways to meet partner, placing inner stick in the middle of your partner’s back.

2 rants on the spot

2 rants turning clockwise as a couple to face DOWN

2 rants out to file, turning to face IN.


 

Couples who are not active dance on the spot.


 

6. Step Up

7. “Fours” (Stars Across the Set)

Rants 1 to 4

Couple 1: 4 rants IN and DOWN the set to form a line with Couple 2

Couple 2: 4 rants on the spot, turning to face DOWN

Couple 3: 4 rants on the spot, turning to face UP

Couple 4: 4 rants IN and UP the set to form a line with Couple 3.

Rants 5 to 12

Dancers form two right-hand Stars (Right and Left file) for one turn, turning to face DOWN (Couples1 and 2) and UP (Couples 3 and 4) at the end.

Rants 13 to 16

Reverse Rants 1 to 4, i.e.

Couple 1: 4 rants backing UP and OUT to their starting positions

Couple 2: 4 rants on the spot, turning to face IN

Couple 3: 4 rants on the spot, turning to face IN

Couple 4: 4 rants backing DOWN and OUT to their starting positions.


 

9 Long Crosses

Rants 1 to 8: Positions 1 RIGHT and 4 LEFT gyp to exchange places

Rants 9 to 16 Positions 1 LEFT and 4 RIGHT exchange places

Rants 17 to 24 Positions 2 RIGHT and 3LEFT exchange places

Rants 25 to 32 Positions 2 LEFT and 3 RIGHT exchange places.


 

Rants 33 to 64: Repeat to return to starting places.


 

9 Hey

Over 32 rants, the dancers follow one circuit of a figure-of-eight as illustrated below:

Notes:

  • The first to cross the centre is Position 2, RIGHT.

  • Then dancers cross alternately from Positions 3 Right and 2 Right

  • ALL dancers start moving at the same time.

  • Dancers rant on the spot once they return to their starting position.

At the end of the figure, all dancers face UP.


 

10. Step Up

Exactly as Figures 1 and 6, except that all dancers face UP at the end and raise both sticks.


 

11 Dance Off

After a short pause (to receive the acclaim of the audience ), the music will recommence, and at an appropriate point – with the call of “Sticks” - all couples dance:

2 rants on the spot

2 rants inward, to meet their partner, putting inside sticks in the middle of their partners’ backs

2 rants on the spot

2 rants turning clockwise to face DOWN

then dance off following Couple 4.
